Romanian Test: The Azimo Story
8 AUGUST 2014
Launched in January 2012, Azimo is a UK-based online social money transfer service gives customers a simple and low cost solution to sending money to 198 countries worldwide, either to a bank account or to over 270,000 cash pick-up points around the world.
We are disrupting the $550 billion traditional money transfer market with rates up to 85 per cent cheaper than legacy transfer providers like Western Union and MoneyGram. This means more money in the pockets of people and less in profits for corporate fat cats!
Our story starts and ends with helping hard working migrants around the world. We are committed to ethical trading – by lowering the cost of transferring money overseas, Azimo is having a real impact on some of the poorest parts of the world.
About the Business
Founded by CEO Michael Kent and CTO Marek Wawro, Azimo is a financial technology company authorised and regulated in the UK by the FCA and registered with HM Revenue and Customs.
Azimo “means something lent”, or “assistance” in Swahili and in Arabic means “The Greatest” or “He who will be great”.
Team Azimo is built by migrants, for migrants. Between our offices in London and Krakow we employ 50 staff from 21 countries, who speak 18 different languages. Our Team is full of amazing personal stories, just like those of our customers.
We are backed by a US$10 million Series A funding round led by Greycroft Partners and including Accion’s Frontier Investments Group, eVentures, TA Ventures, RI Digital Ventures and KRW Schindler Investments.
