We love our customers so much and we wanted to highlight how brilliant they are in our new series! Our Customer of the Month for May is Silvia. Originally from Spain, she’s currently travelling around South America…
Tell us a bit about yourself…
My home town is Sant Celoni, near Barcelona, where until recently I worked in a nursery school. But my career prospects were pretty poor, so I decided to take a big step and try my luck in another country, Uruguay. I spent eight months living and working there before deciding that it was time to move on and get to know the rest of South America.
How long have you been travelling for?
I’ve been travelling for a year and four months now. So far, as well as Uruguay, I’ve spent time in Argentina, Chile and Ecuador, and next I’m headed for Colombia. I haven’t rushed, as I wanted to stick to the rhythm and get to know the culture of each country – I spent five months in Chile and it was wonderful! Sadly, Colombia will be my last stop as I don’t have much money left: it’s not easy to find work as a migrant here and the salaries are very low – even on a backpacking budget!
What’s the purpose of the trip?
I’d dreamed of going on a big adventure, but for a long time I didn’t have the guts to do it. But when I finally took the plunge it felt brilliant. I’ve always wanted to step out of my comfort zone and give up all the luxuries of home for a while. It’s been scary at times, but a great experience overall.
How did you first discover Azimo?
I was a member of the PAH social movement in Spain – the Plataforma de Afectados por la Hipoteca (Platform for People Affected by Mortgages). The movement bails out families and defends their right to housing, and we were forever denouncing the exorbitant fees imposed by the banks. So when I arrived in Uruguay, I was very keen to avoid the huge fees charged by banks there. I searched the internet for the best way to transfer money abroad and discovered Azimo – and I haven’t looked back since!
Would you recommend us?
Of course I would, the service has been brilliant in comparison – everything from the super low fees to the helpful customer service. And I’m shouting about Azimo too! When you’re backpacking, you share tips and tricks with people you meet and money transfer always comes up. So now I’m always recommending Azimo and I know that some of my fellow travellers are already using it!
How much do you think you’ll save on this trip with Azimo?
I’m not sure exactly, but I reckon I’ve already saved at least €250! Plus I haven’t been lining the banks’ pockets with my hard-earned money, which is hugely satisfying! I’ll definitely be using Azimo for all my trips outside Spain from now on and I hope that many of my friends will try it out too. After all, what’s not to like?
