As many as three million Nigerians receive money from overseas each year, with more than £20 billion sent in 2015, and our newly revamped service puts us leagues ahead of the competition:

  • All of our transactions to Nigeria are fee-free
  • You get the best rate on the market – always
  • You can send money to any bank in Nigeria in as little as 6 seconds

“It’s a privilege to join the Azimo team and champion the work they’re doing to make sending money home radically cheaper and faster. Supporting family back home means a huge amount to me and all my fellow Nigerians, and I’ve been amazed by just how much money Azimo can save us all,” says Kanu, who’s fondly known as “Papilo” to his millions of fans.

A legend on the pitch…

To football-mad Nigerians, Kanu needs no introduction. During his playing career, he won pretty much everything going: the Premier League, the FA Cup, the UEFA Cup, the Champions League and an Olympic gold medal. He played for everyone from Ajax to West Bromwich Albion, but he’s best remembered for his performances for Arsenal and Nigeria. Kanu played 197 games for the Gunners, won 86 caps for his country and was twice crowned African Footballer of the Year. (He was also no.1 in our Top 7 all-time Nigerian footballers list – read it here).

…and off it

Despite all his success on the pitch, though, Kanu’s life hasn’t been without its struggles. His playing career was interrupted by a serious heart defect and he had to have surgery in 1996 to correct a faulty aortic valve. This traumatic experience inspired him to set up the Kanu Heart Foundation (KHF) in 2000. The aim? To help children in Nigeria and other African countries get the life-saving heart surgery and cardiac treatment they so desperately need but so often can’t afford.

“I have won a lot of trophies and medals in football,” said the Nigerian legend. “But the best trophy I have won and cherished more than any other has been saving souls through the Kanu Nwankwo Heart Foundation.” To date, the KHF has funded more than 500 heart operations.

Azimo already donates 10% of all its profits to charities to help make a difference in countries we send money to, and to celebrate this announcement we’ve pledged to donate a percentage of every transaction we send to Nigeria to support the Kanu Heart Foundation’s life-saving work in Africa.

“The term legend is overused but not in this case: Kanu is the ultimate Naija icon,” says Michael Kent, CEO of Azimo. “An inspiration to millions of Nigerians at home and abroad, he’s the perfect ambassador for us. Like so many of our customers, he worked hard and overcame some major obstacles to find success. And now, through his heart foundation and his work with UNICEF, he has dedicated himself to giving something back. It’s very clear that he holds the same values as we do and I’m honoured that he’s working with us.”
